Gaining a son ...

OR ... Losing a daughter?

I hope I have not lost her - though sometimes now she seems a million miles away. It is very hard to wrap my head around the fact that she is 20, in college, and now married! All these things make me extremely happy, but why then do I long for the days of bringing her home from the hospital in a BLIZZARD in Denver, or pushing her in her Little Tykes car in Georgia, or watching her make her first SNOW BLOB in Massachusetts and seeing her face light up the first time she put on her very own pointe shoes and fighting with her while she was learning how to drive ... I'm happy and sad all at the same time -- it is really quite hard. All those memories ... it truly was A Simpler Time! But time marches on and I will have many new memories -- Texas Ashley memories and Ashley and Forrest memories -- wherever life may take them.

The first time I saw or heard about Forrest ... this is what I saw .... yes ... this is Forrest -- my new son-in-law! Forrest making a silly face for the camera - just like Ashley usually does! He appeared in Ashley's 100 days of moving photos on FB three years ago ... and they became fast friends. I heard Forrest this and Forrest that ... I figured they may be more than friends ... but she insisted they were friends. Muffin absolutely adores him ... and I know Forrest adores Muffin!

They became an official FB couple on October 31, 2010; they have been through good times and bad. They have had fights and have made up. They have been to proms and have done the BIG MUM exchange for the Boswell HS Homecoming ! (which really is a BIG DEAL in TEXAS!). They have supported each other through some tough family issues and have had to say good-bye to each other .... when she left for college and he left for Navy boot camp and then again a few days after they got married. They have laughed and cried together .... and they love each other unconditionally. They sometimes Facetime each other and don't say a word -- just knowing the other is there helps them be apart. They now will need to be supportive as each works towards a goal that will make them stronger as a couple -- she's a Sophomore studying Elementary Education at UNT and he's a Machinist Mate stationed on the USS Eisenhower in Virginia.

And now ... they have taken the next step in their lives .... They became husband and wife on August 14, 2013. So ... I have NOT lost a daughter -- I have gained a son and am very proud of both of them!

 Exchanging Rings

I was so touched when Ashley came to me and asked if she could wear the dress I wore when Steven and I renewed our Wedding Vows. Ashley re-designed the dress, had it altered, and it looked gorgeous. She also wore my shoes that I wore when I got married ... I did not realize that those things meant a lot to Ashley ... one night I cried myself to sleep because I was so touched that she wanted to use these things on her special day. It really meant the world to me, more than she can even imagine. She also has my mom's wedding engagement ring along with a beautiful diamond band that Forrest picked out for her ... My mom was so happy that they could use it and feels that it will bring them MANY years of happiness!! It was great to get her blessing for the ring. I hated that it was sitting in my jewel box.

My students need your help!

Hi Facebook, Web & Twitter Friends:

This year, I am teaching Kindergarten -- this classroom was added so there are limited supplies for my kiddos. For those of you who know how passionate I am about teaching, I want to make sure my students have the materials they need to succeed. So I've created a classroom project request at DonorsChoose.org, an award-winning charity. If you know me, you know I love books--my project focuses on getting some GREAT picture books, Scholastic magazines, and a REAL bookshelf for my Kindergarten Classroom. I know my students will love having access to some wonderful authors, like Eric Carle and be able to take their Scholastic Magazines home to share with their families!

I'm asking for donations of any size to help my kids. For the next week, any donation you make to my project will be doubled (up to $100). If you are unable to donate, but you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along. Your donation will brighten my students' school year, and you'll get photos and thank you notes from our class.

Here's my classroom request:
Have Students - Need Books

To have your donation matched dollar for dollar, enter the match code INSPIRE on the payment screen. This awesome match offer lasts through September 8, 2013.

My students and I greatly appreciate your support.
Thank you all for your support!!!!!

A HORSE - of course ...

Back in June, I entered a contest on Facebook -- one of many that I click on ... this one was sponsored by School Outfitters . It also wasn't just a contest where you clicked "like" and "share" - you had to write a response and email to them.

Q -
What's your favorite outdoor activity to do with your students/kids?

A -
My favorite outdoor activity to do with kids is observe nature! I love taking a nature walk and having the kids look for things ... sticks, rocks, leaves, flowers, acorns, cotton (from cottonwoods) ... any thing and everything. I give the kids a bag and we walk for about 30 - 45 minutes, when we come back to the classroom, they dump out their bags and make an entry in their science journal. They draw and write about what they collected (this is awesome to do in each season). We then we use the things they collected and they make a collage!

Lots of fun!!!!!  :)

I've done this with Kinder, Grade 3 and the children who come to the Fort Worth Nature Center when I volunteer for story time!

******
So that was it. I sent my reply away and on June 11th I received this email from a representative from School Outfitters--

"Congratulations! You were randomly chosen as our winner of the SportsPlay Pony Spring Rider playground toy giveaway on our School Outfitters Facebook page. All I need is an address you’d like this shipped to, and I’ll get it sent right out.

Thanks for being a part of our community on Facebook, and congrats again! We hope you and your kids enjoy the new playground toy and are having a great summer!

Thank you,

School Outfitters - Furnishing great places to learn"

And ... a few days ago -- the prize arrived! This is super cool - and I finally have my very own HORSE!! This horse is definitely heavy duty! The spring is gigantic and very heavy and the horse is most likely made from pig iron - she is very solid and it is super cool that it is a freestanding base, so we did not have to dig into our limestone laden backyard!

Meet my new horse!

 THE SPRING!

THE HORSE!!!!!!

 Ready to be put together
Thank you Steven - this was not the easiest of tasks!

BUTTERCUP - I think that is the perfect name for this horse!

Muffin now has something to guard in the backyard - she seems to like Buttercup!

Thank you School Outfitters & SportsPlay for this really cool prize!
Teachers - check out the School Outfitters web-site and Facebook page for awesome products!

We all love Buttercup and she will stay in our yard forever!

Muffin's Birthday

Muffin - August 8, 2010
August 8 - 2013 / 3 years old

We are not exactly sure when Muffin was born, but she was about 12 weeks old when we rescued her. She came to live with us on August 8, 2010 - such a sweet little girl - she had no problem fitting right into our family!

HELP ME! perfect 21st birthday pic!
She has been through many health issues - mange, hip issues, and ringworm ... and she has been a trooper; from taking her meds to not making too much of a fuss for the sulfurated lyme baths-which were really not very pleasant.

She is definitely a "character" and I look forward to writing many more books about her and having her around for a LONG time!

I kinda like this HAT!

My birthday breakfast!
YUMMMMMMMMM!!!!!

No can't be gluten FREE!

It's delicious!

 PRESENTS!!!!

That "muffin" was PAW licking GOOD!!!!

Thank you Woof Gang Bakery for making my birthday
SWEET!!!!!

Muffin's Birthday extra special!

Here are some highlights from Muffins 3rd birthday ... or 21st birthday (which Ashley can't believe Muffin beat her to 21!)

Music to your Ears ...

Kristin and I 21 years ago!
She was about ready to give birth &
I was 6 months pregnant - digging my
Pea In The Pod shirt - YIKES!
I met Kristin Hillegonds many moons ago (see the picture! and yes, Kristin agreed that I could use it in this post!) We both worked for Amoco in Chicago and we became fast friends. We spent numerous lunch hours together and many good times together outside of work! We've kept in contact, as best we could, for 20+ years. I am proud to call her a friend and am excited to help her announce the opening of her music studio .... Revolution Music!

Since leaving Amoco, Kristin has become an accomplished harpist and I am very proud of her. The music the trio make together is heavenly and hers is the only CD I have played in my car! I know Kristin makes a wonderful music teacher and I hope you can check out her CD's and, if you live in NW Indiana stop by her music studio, and possibly attend her wonderful Christmas Event she performs in with her trio and other musicians and singers.

Tell us a little about yourself
KRISTIN!

I have lived in Northwest Indiana most of my life. I am married and am the mother of three sons. Two are currently attending college and one is in high school. I have been married for 24 years. I have been playing some sort of instrument since I was 6 years old.

When did you start playing the harp?
I studied harp privately as an adult, in my 20's.

Why did you choose the harp?
I was always fascinated with the harp even as a child. The sheer beauty of the instrument itself and the calming sound it delivers.   (I agree with you Kristin! I love playing your music during creative time in my classroom - kids love it and it is so soothing!)

Do you play any other instruments?
I've played piano since I was in Kindergarten. I took lessons through high school. I started on the saxophone in band but then I decided to play clarinet and bass clarinet instead. Saxophone seemed more of a boy instrument so that's why I switched! :0)   I played in the marching band and wind ensemble in high school and enjoyed every minute of it!

Tell us about your group? What kinds of music do you play, where do you play? Names of your CD's ...
The Silverwood Trio
I started a group called the Silverwood Trio with a violinist after we were brought together to perform at a wedding. We liked our sound, we worked well together and it just kind of took off from there. The group consists of a harp, flute, and violin. Our sound is unique. We have been performing all over the Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area for over 14 years now. We play primarily for weddings and cocktail hours, but we also perform for corporate events and parties, especially Christmas parties. We play all sorts of genres of music. Classical, contemporary, Christian, pop. Stephen does a lot of arranging for the group and I'm starting to dabble in it a little as well. We have also been producing a Christmas concert for the last five years that has grown in popularity; it is called Come to The Stable. Several local musicians and vocalists join us to celebrate Christ's birth! The Silverwood Trio has also recorded two CD's; This Christmastide and Be Thou My Vision, a hymns CD dedicated to our grandparents and their walk of faith. One goal we have is to produce a Lullaby CD. The Silverwood Trio is not just a group of professionals, but we are close friends and I love them both. We work well together and I think it comes shining through in our music.

What is your new venture?
My new venture is opening a music school in St. John, IN! It is called Revolution Music. I am teaching a method of piano through a company called Simply Music. I am a certified teacher and I love it! It is a played based method that has students of all ages (not just children) playing great sounding music from their very first lessons using two hands! We delay the reading process for a time so the student will have 30 - 50 songs in their repertoire before they even read a single note! I also teach a program for 4 to 6 year olds called Play A Story. We will also be offering flute, violin, and harp lessons. We have some more studio space to fill so we will be offering more instruments in the near future.

Are you excited to own your own business?
I am super excited to own my own business. I am blessed that my studio has grown and couldn't be opening without a committed student and parent base. I am thankful they were open to this new method of learning. The parents are thrilled with the results and most do not have to remind their children to practice! I love that!

What challenges do you think this will bring?
The challenges I feel will be having to be responsible for the business end of owning your own business. Marketing, hiring teachers that are a good fit for this school, managing growth and promoting and maintaining the studio. My passion is for my students and developing their skills so I'd rather be teaching! :0)

THANKS KRISTIN!  I am so glad you were able to do an interview for me and my web-site! I miss you and hope I can see you soon!!! We both have come a LONG way since that preggers picture! Good luck with your new music school!

Amigo's - Preschool Visit

AMIGO'S  SPANISH  PRESCHOOL

Went Out To Get a Donut - Came Home With a Muffin
What do you think this story is about?
On July 31, 2013, Ashley and I packed up my book stuff and drove to The Colony, Texas to visit the children at Amigo's Spanish Preschool. Rita Rodriguez's newly opened preschool was beautifully decorated and very warm and inviting! When we arrived the children were engaged in art activities - the 4's were making coffee filter butterflies-I love that activity! The 3's and 4's all met me on the carpet at 10:00am for story time!

After hearing both Muffin books -- the children voted and their favorite was What's In the Corner? A Muffin "Tail"!

Here are some pictures from my visit!
Have you ever seen donuts on the playground? (Donut / Muffin)

Some wonderfully, floppy-eared, joyful pups! (Donut / Muffin)

I hope it's nothing very scary!!!! (A Muffin "Tail")

BLOG HOP ... hop ... hop

I have been asked to participate in a BLOG HOP ... Thanks Jodi Desautels for asking me to participate! I'd like all of you to visit these children's authors sites and leave a comment here-everyone who leaves a comment will be entered to win an eBook of one of my books! For those of you unfamiliar with a BLOG HOP -- it's a chance for each author to answer a few questions and for followers to learn about other authors and their works.

HAPPY BLOG HOPPING!

1) What am I working on right now?
Right now I am concentrating on doing plenty of marketing for my latest book - What's In the Corner? A Muffin "Tail". I'm also finishing up a sequel to A Simpler Time and hope to send that to the publisher by the end of Summer so it will release in 2014. I also have another Muffin book in the works and for those of you familiar with Muffin's books, it will also be a sing-song "tail"!

2) How do my works differ from other works in it's genre?
My first two books challenge young readers to think and look differently at the world around them. The Life of Bud and A Simpler Time are both used by classroom teachers -- either to teach the life cycle or helping to teach children to write science journals. The two Muffin books are perfect for pre-readers and early readers - the rhyming, repetitive nature of these books make children want to read ... and when their parents download the FREE audio of the books, they hear me singing and can then SING along with the book, learning those pre-reading skills!

3) Why do you write what you do?
I write about the world around me. I love nature and am fascinated by everything I see! My friends and family often giggle at me because I will notice leaves, or bugs, or clouds and mention things about them. I've always been fascinated with nature and grew up making mud pies and skipping rocks on the lake near my house. The Muffin books have been extremely FUN to write. I went out of my comfort zone and shared my silly side with the world - well -- maybe not the world ... YET! Being a Kindergarten teacher, I found children love to sing and if you teach them anything by singing it - they learn it very quickly! The Muffin books are rhyming, repetitive, mystery "tails" that are sung and are just a whole lot of fun!

4) How does your writing process work?
I always tell children that my ideas come at the most CRAZY times -- I had the finished product of The Life of Bud come to me while I was in the shower. I drive with the radio off and lots of times when I'm at home the TV is NOT on. I enjoy the quiet and when an idea comes to me I grab my journal and write down ideas as quickly as I can. I then shut the journal and put it away for a few days - I will pull it out and then read what I wrote to see if it is something I really can use or was it just a fleeting idea. But, I do my best writing work, when I'm not sitting at a desk with a computer screen staring me down. I need to be cleaning, or showering, or gardening, or walking the dog, or driving .... that is when my best ideas come to me!

Helping a Community

 READ FOR RANCHO FUNDRAISING EVENT
This is Brandy Herr organizer of the event!
Brandy is also the author of The Adventures of Freddie
Spaghetti and Meat Ball

Me ... I'm thinking I need another table!
The Read for Rancho Children's Book Fundraising Event was held on Wednesday, July 17 at the Decker Gym in Granbury, TX. Many members of the community attended along with the children from the Boys & Girls Club. The counselors all stopped by our tables and thanked us for participating in the event and the kids loved hearing all the stories! We met the director of the Community Center and she told us the renovations to the Community Center are really coming along, and she is hoping to invite us all back for the dedication ... that would be really awesome! Attending Authors were: Brandy Herr, Brothers Gromm, Danna Walters, Elaine Fields Smith & Yours Truly.

Danna Walters, author of Every Good
Princess, Marries a Prince
The children and adults got to mingle and meet the authors before the event and each author was able to present their book by reading, or in my case, singing! That gave people plenty of time to purchase raffle tickets for some great prizes! Mercer Mayer, author of The Little Critter Books, autographed and sent books for this event!

There were books, and other really cool prizes from all over the country. Thanks Fleur'tee Bee Boutique for the two $25.00 gift certificates that you donated for the event! One of them was won by a counselor for the Boys and Girls Club, and the other was won by a friend of author Danna Walters!

Ashley, being Ashley!
I love when she comes and helps me out at events!
Remember ... she is the main character from A Simpler Time
as you can see, she is QUITE the character!

Me, on stage, asking the kids - what they think is IN THE CORNER?

I decided to EAT the MIC!

The prize table!!!

Me with the Master of Ceremonies -- Brandy Herr!

I love sharing my stories with children, but also being able to link that with helping a community in need makes it even more special, and it was an honor to be at the event. Thanks to everyone who donated a raffle item and everyone who attended the fundraiser. Finally, I wish only the best for everyone in the Rancho Brazos Community!

If you would like me to attend your event or speak at your school, please contact me at thelifeofbud@aol.com.

What's In The Corner?

Muffin's latest book released June 4, 2013

Writing, to me, is an extension of what is going on in the world around me. I've shared my love of nature with you in a previous post. My two latest books - Went Out To Get a Donut - Came Home With a Muffin and What's In the Corner? A Muffin "Tail" are both stories based on true events.

Miss Muffin at 12 weeks old
When we decided it was time for a puppy, we searched rescue sites on the internet and Muffin truly captured our hearts! It was August 9, and we had just had breakfast and then went out to get MUFFIN! This is her first picture at our house.

Her best friend was a beagle named Mabel. Mabel was our beagle who has since been taken to Doggie Heaven. Muffin and Mabel had lots of fun together - they'd move bricks along the fence, play in the mud after it rained, and were just best buddies.

Miss Muffin and Mabel Meet

Muffin had an attraction to the CORNER of the backyard from a young age. She'd run there every morning and give a little bark up at the tree. We started saying to each other "what's in the corner?" Muffin, understands many things we say, so this one stuck, and it seemed to become a game!
We later found out that a big, grey cat would sit up in the tree and mess with her. So naturally, What's In the Corner? A Muffin "Tail" was written. I used all of Muffin's favorite things throughout the book and it just had to be a song!

Here is the link to see Muffin in action checking out the corner:

When I speak at schools and libraries, I talk to children about writing and the writing process and also about how you can take things that happen in your life and make stories out of them.
